Ocean Course
The Premier Ponte Vedra Golf Experience
The Ocean Course has been a cornerstone amenity of the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club for more than 90 years. Originally designed by famed British architect and professional golfer Herbert Strong, the Inn & Club’s signature course has undergone three major renovations: first in 1947, again in 1998 and this historic renovation completed by golf course architect Bobby Weed along with MacCurrach Golf Construction.
As the Ocean Course approaches its centennial anniversary, the many enhancements include; modern turf grasses on the greens, fairways and tee boxes, design improvements to course playability with the exciting addition of a new hole, expansion of the practice and teaching facilities and upgrades to golf course infrastructure.
The Ocean Course, now playing as a par-71, captures the essence of a modern seaside design with expansive fairways, strategically placed bunkers and lagoons with newly designed green complexes. State of the art grasses include TifEagle bermudagrass on the greens, Celebration bermudagrass on the fairways and TifGrand bermudagrass on the tees. Additionally, golf course bunkers are rebuilt and reconfigured with an emphasis on strategy, overall aesthetics, and maintainability. Expansive swaths of non-turf screening areas were introduced, reducing irrigated and maintained rough grasses while adding a striking visual contrast and strategic value to the design of the Ocean Course.
Major design changes to the golf course include lower green complexes and additional screening areas. Hole #2 green pushes closer to the surrounding lagoon. Hole #9 with its historic Island Green has been visually enhanced to provide a better view of the putting surface. Hole #13 is the exciting new par 3 with yardage ranging from 99 yards to 178 yards. Hole #14 offers players a completely new look from the tees making this hole a longer and more challenging par 5. Hole #17 now features an enlarged lagoon bordering the right side of the hole.
The practice facility has been extensively upgraded with the south tee area being tripled in size and the addition of a north tee for PGA Professional instruction.
